When Rain Doesn’t Spoil the Day

My worst “fear” about our expensive trip came true, but it turned out to be my favorite part. How did that happen?

Worry and the Unlocked Car

My typical reaction would be to fret and worry about someone stealing the car or at the very least, taking the ancient iPad and extra snacks we left in there. But in the true spirit of a bucket list trip, I decided I was not going to think about the unlocked car until we returned on Sunday.

Do You Like Cucumbers?

It's Still Here

This Bur Oak tree will keep on producing oxygen, taking in our carbon dioxide, and providing acorns and shelter to local squirrels and wildlife. It is a life giver, not a life taker.

Look Up

The impermanence of clouds can give us perspective about the world and its troubles. I can’t stay focused on the hate, corruption, and cruelty without being consumed by it, wrung out and hopeless.

Many Hands

On our own, some jobs seem overwhelming, some problems seem more than we could handle. But everyone can do something, no matter how small.

If You See Something, Say Something

There are plenty of things going awry in today’s world, and we should say something. But we can’t only focus on the negative. That’s not how a life is lived or at least lived well.

Hold on to Hope - Part 2

You see, we need each other to hold on to hope. I couldn’t have come up with that solution on my own; I needed my dad and mom to help me.

Hold on to Hope

I learned my lesson with these labradorite earrings – always wear backs on earrings even if it seems unlikely they could slip out. But I learned an even more important lesson – don’t give up.

Why I Have a Purple Toaster

I’m keeping the purple toaster to remind me that going slow is OK. It may even be advantageous in the long run.

Being in 2025

If you’re like me, the thought of having one more thing to do or one more thing to keep track of adds to the overwhelm of a full-enough schedule. And so I’m looking for a gentler way to move toward life as I think it should be lived.

Love and Puppy Tummies

The vulnerability needed in showing love to others requires me to recognize that my worldview isn’t the only one, and it is biased, based on my temperament, education, and life experiences. Yours is, too.

The Festival of Lights and Baby Sweaters

Someone had to make an effort to create that beauty. Someone or someones had a vision for what this Festival of Lights might bring to our little community as well as the rural folks living nearby.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves – Part 2

We must interrogate the stories we tell ourselves so that we avoid embarrassing ourselves and hurting others. Though blaming someone else for our troubles is an easier path, it rarely solves the problem, and it keeps us stuck in a cycle of irresponsibility.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves

I told myself a story that wasn’t true based on my interpretation of what I read and my own personal lens. I deceived myself by believing what I wanted to believe.

Squirrels and Other Aggravations

The dogs haven’t learned that they will never, ever win in their desire to rid our yard, or our village, of squirrels. In their quest to alter reality, these dogs take after their adopted mother: me.

What We See

Rather than expecting everyone to view reality as we do, I’m wondering if we can be open, curious even, to asking questions in a sincere, nonjudgmental way about why someone holds particular opinions or interpretations of reality.

Saying "I Do"

Bringing home a puppy is inviting chaos and a lot of extra work into your home. It’s also saying, “I do” to more love and joy, and that’s what I want, regardless of my age.
